A 14-year-old boy was yesterday killed in a road traffic collision in Downpatrick.

The child, who is believed to have been a pedestrian, was knocked down on the Flying Horse Road in the town at around 6.50pm.

A spokesman for the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service said a rapid response vehicle and an emergency crew attended the scene along with the HEMS team, who attended by car.

He added that: "No-one was taken from the scene".

Last night, the road remained closed between Struell Avenue and Old Course Road.

An ambulance remained at the scene, along with police. A dark-coloured Seat car could also be seen.

SDLP councillor John Trainor said: "This is terrible news for any parent to receive.

"My thoughts and prayers at this difficult time are with the family, friends and all those involved in this incident," he said.

“If anyone has any information relating to this incident please contact the PSNI to help them conclude their investigations".
