Man (35) in court charged with attempted murder following stabbing in Newry

A 35-year-old man has appeared in court following a stabbing in Newry.

Latvian national Viktors Panfilovs, of Talbot Street in Newry, appeared in the city's magistrates court charged with attempted murder.

A detective constable said she could connect the accused to the charge and no bail application was made.

A 41-year-old man was stabbed in the leg on Talbot Street Friday night.

A 22-year-old man who was also arrested was later released without charge.

Speaking through an interpreter, Mr Panfilovs confirmed his name and date of birth.

Defence solicitor Declan Boyle cross-examined the detective and asked if she was “aware of allegations made during interview”.

“There have been certain admissions during interview and as such I would expect the case to be fast tracked,” Mr Boyle said.

The officer confirmed that she was aware.

District judge Mark McGarrity adjourned the case to February 19.

The defendant was remanded into custody.
