THREE men broke into a house in east Belfast, assaulted a man and stole a woman's handbag.

The gang targeted the house on Dromore Street, off Cregagh Road, at around 7.20pm on Tuesday.

Police said a man in the house was hit across the hand during the burglary.

The men left with a woman's handbag, including money and bank cards.

It is thought they escaped in a small black car, driven by a fourth man.

A PSNI spokesman said it was a "distressing ordeal, which has left the couple shaken".

"The burglary happened in a busy residential area, and at a time of the evening when people could still have been out and about, going about their business."

He appealed to anyone with information or who may have dash cam footage, to contact police on 101.
