THE funeral of a teenage girl killed in a tragic farm accident is due to take place in Newry today.

Abbie Nummy (14), a pupil at Newry High School, has been remembered as "kind and caring".

The young girl, who was from Newry, died after an accident in the rural Bernish area on Saturday afternoon shortly after 2pm.

Emergency services, including the Air Ambulance, attended the scene. But it is understood she could not be saved.

The Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI) are investigating the circumstances surrounding the teenager's death. The PSNI have also said a report would be prepared for the coroner.

Seven people died in farm accidents in Northern Ireland last year, according to HSENI figures.

Tributes have been paid to the teenager, a year 10 pupil at Newry High School. Principal Iestyn Brown said the entire school community had been left "deeply shocked and saddened" by her death.

"Abbie was a very popular, conscientious and talented pupil," he said.

"She was exceptionally gentle, kind and caring.

"She will be very much missed in school by her fellow pupils and staff alike and will be remembered with great love and affection by all those who knew her.

"Abbie’s wide circle of friends and classmates are heartbroken by her untimely loss and are being supported by staff and relevant professionals.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Abbie’s family at this tragic time and we extend our sincere sympathy and condolences to them."

Messages of condolence have also been posted online following Abbie's death.

One tribute said she was "the loveliest, well mannered child", while another said she was "such a beautiful wee girl".

Abbie is survived by her parents Andrew and Lorna and siblings Jamie and Darcie.

Her funeral service will be held today in St Mary's Parish Church, Newry at 1pm before interment in Presbyterian Cemetery, Armagh Road, Newry.
