Man arrested following assault on shop staff and police on north Belfast's Antrim Road

Officers later arrested a 27-year-old man in the New Lodge area

A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of assault, criminal damage and theft following a series of incidents on north Belfast's Antrim Road.

Staff stopped a man walking behind the counter in a shop at around 4.40pm on Thursday, but one of them was punched in the face as they tried to escort him outside.

A short time later a man, matching the description given moments earlier, entered another shop nearby and threatened staff.

No money was handed over but the man made off from the shop with several items of stock.

Officers later arrested a 27-year-old man in the New Lodge area on suspicion of three counts of assault, assault on police, possessing an offensive weapon in a public place, criminal damage and theft.

He remained in police custody last night and detectives have asked anyone who was in the and witnessed either incident or has any information which could be of assistance to contact them at Musgrave on 101 quoting reference number 1389 21/11/19.
