QUEEN'S University Belfast is to host a two-day conference on unionism in the face of Brexit.

The event, entitled Unions and Unionisms Symposium: Brexit and these Islands, will take place on Thursday and Friday.

Speakers will discuss the UK, as well as "unionisms in Ireland, England, Wales, and the UK and Spain".

They will also explore unionism as the UK seeks to leave the European Union.

British prime minister and Tory leader Boris Johnson is pushing for the UK to leave the EU by October 31, but his party's Westminster allies the DUP have rejected his proposed deal with Brussels.

The free symposium is being held in partnership with the University of Edinburgh's Centre on Constitutional Change and the University of Aberdeen's Research Institute of Irish and Scottish Studies.

Among the guest speakers are Professor Kalypso Nicolaidis of the University of Oxford, author of Exodus, Reckoning, Sacrifice: The Three Meanings of Brexit.

Those attending will also hear from Professor Jennifer Todd of University College Dublin, Professor Henry Patterson of Ulster University, and University College Cork's Dr Mary Murphy.

All sessions will be chaired by academics from Queen's.

In May, the union that represents most Queen's lecturers accused some unionist parties and politicians of attacks on academic freedom.

The University and College Union (UCU) claimed DUP members had complained to the university about views expressed by lecturers and also cited correspondence from the TUV leader Jim Allister.

But the DUP and Mr Allister dismissed the criticism, saying that academics should be open to challenge and "healthy debate".
