GARDAÍ have refused to comment on reports that two of its officers on border surveillance had filed false reports to skip off work.

The officers had been assigned to monitor the movements of dissident republicans, according to a report in the Sunday Times.

The paper claimed both are now under investigation for allegedly falsifying surveillance reports to hide the fact they were not working.

It said the matter came to light after the officers emailed a report to account for their movements and provide information on suspects, properties and vehicles they had been monitoring.

The truthfulness of the official report was called into question when a more senior garda noticed the time stamp on the email showed it had been sent when the officers said they were out on patrol.

The officers were unable to explain the discrepancy.

It is not known if the two gardai have been sanctioned or formally disciplined.

Catherine Murphy, joint leader of the Social Democrats, said such behaviour should not be tolerated.

"It is completely unacceptable for gardaí who are assigned to anti-terrorist duties to behave in such a fashion," she said.

It was reported that Special Branch has launched an internal inquiry into the matter.

An Garda Síochána said it does not comment on internal disciplinary investigations.
