A BELFAST man has appeared in court accused of having martial arts nunchucks and damaging a hospital fire extinguisher.

Neil Otero (22) faces a further count of assaulting another man in the city last month.

The charges are connected to an alleged incident in the Broadway area on July 30.

Otero, of Woodvale Road, is charged with possessing an offensive weapon in a public place, common assault and criminal damage to the extinguisher belonging to the Royal Victoria Hospital.

Although no further details were disclosed, a police officer told Belfast Magistrates' Court he could connect the accused to the alleged offences.

Otero was released on continuing bail, and is due to return to court next month.

He is expected to indicate his attitude to the charges at that stage.
