A MAN who sent his former partner videos of him threatening their dog and kicking it has been jailed and disqualified from keeping any animal for a period of five years.

Peter Mongan (23), of Maureen Avenue in Derry, admitted causing unnecessary suffering to an animal, harassment and breaching a restraining order on May 29.

The court heard the injured party, Mongan's former partner, said he had sent her texts threatening to hurt their dog unless she came to his flat and spent the night there, which she did not want to do.

In some of the texts, he explicitly stated he would hurt the dog unless she replied to his messages.

The woman was also sent two videos of Mongan kicking the dog and he could be heard saying, "Can you see this?"

The court was told that on January 31 last year, a man had reported being assaulted while walking up Bond's Hill in the city.

He said Mongan approached him asking for money and attacked him when he refused.

Mongan was also convicted of handling stolen goods between March 29 and April 5 this year.

The court was told Mongan brought a TV into a shop in Ferryquay Street and used his own account to sell it.

He received £190 for the TV, which had been stolen.

He told police he had been given the TV to sell in exchange for some money.

Defence counsel Eoghan Devlin said these were "ugly offences" and he accepted custody was inevitable.

He said the defendant had made full admissions to all offences.

Deputy District Judge Laura Ievers said that Mongan had spared the injured party giving evidence.

She sentenced Mongan to seven months in prison and disqualified him from owning any animal for five years.
