Angela Merkel flag creator marries German girlfriend
THE creator of a famous Irish football flag reading "Angela Merkel thinks we're at work", has married his German girlfriend.
The flag made by soccer fans became an internet sensation and was later auctioned off for charity.
Half the proceeds went to Oscar Knox who was fighting a rare form of cancer.
Five friends from Limerick were pictured at Dublin airport before Euro 2012 with the flag emblazoned with the words "Angela Merkel Thinks We're At Work".
The tournament took place amid the financial crash, subsequent bail-out and severe austerity measures put in place in Ireland.
Pictures of the flag were published across the world and appeared on the front page of German tabloid Bild.
Thousands of Irish football fans had put work on hold to support their team in Europe.
One of its creators, Richie Tuohy, has now married German woman Orlagh Eichhol.
Orlagh's dad got in touch with Angela Merkel's office six months ago to invite the German leader to the wedding.
Mrs Merkel sent a signed photograph and message to the couple. She told them: "Marriage, like life itself, is not a comfortable and peaceful state. But a great adventure with many surprises and trials to pass."
The flag was auctioned for charity in 2012 with money going to Oscar Knox.
During Euro 2012, which took place in Poland and Ukraine, Oscar held up his own version of the flag, which said: "My ma thinks I'll be in bed early". Oscar died in 2014.
