THERE have been calls for anyone who can help identify the body of a man found dead in a stolen car in Derry to come forward.

Police were last night still trying to identify the man, three days after being found in the crashed vehicle which had caught fire.

The red Mazda struck a lamppost at Fairview Road in Derry’s Galliagh area around 4.15am on Saturday.

The rear of the vehicle was extensively damaged in the blaze after the car came to rest close to a water pumping station.

Police believe a number of other people may have been in the car at the time of the collision but fled the scene before emergency services arrived.

It emerged later the car was stolen from the Oakfield Avenue area of Derry.

It is understood the PSNI has been liaising with gardaí in Co Donegal in their efforts to identify the deceased.

SDLP councillor Brian Tierney last night called on anyone who could help identify the man to contact police.

“The police need help to identify this man so that his body can be returned to his family and they can grieve for him,” Mr Tierney said.

Sinn Féin MP Elisha McCallion also said the investigation into Saturday’s accident must be allowed to continue unhindered.

“The community has been shocked by this incident,” Ms McCallion said.
