TWO people who were in a light aircraft which crashed in Co Tyrone on Wednesday night are in a stable condition in hospital.

The pair were taken to Craigavon Area Hospital after their plane came down in a field at Clonoe, outside Coalisland, shortly before 8.30pm.

A spokesperson for the Southern Health and Social Care Trust yesterday confirmed their condition.

A councillor who lives less than a mile from where the accident took place on the Annaghnaboe Road said the community initially "feared the worst".

SDLP councillor Malachy Quinn said that because of the large number of police, fire and ambulance crews on the scene, there had been concerns about the gravity of the incident.

"We get a lot of aircraft flying over this area and everyone is relieved we are not talking about a more serious accident or even a fatality," he said.

Sinn Féin vice-president Michelle O’Neill, who is from Clonoe, has praised the efforts of paramedics and the emergency services.

She said the crash had shocked the local community and wished those involved a "full and speedy recovery".

A spokesperson for the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service said it despatched two emergency crews, two doctors, and one rapid response paramedic after receiving a 999 call.

He said: "Following assessment and initial treatment at the scene, two patients were transferred to Craigavon Area Hospital."
