LIVERPOOL fans from Northern Ireland are scrambling to book flights for the Champions League final in Madrid following their team's surprise win over Barcelona.

The final will be held at Atletico Madrid's Wanda Metropolitano stadium on June 1.

Liverpool's victory on Wednesday night means that weekend return flights to Madrid from Ireland are in short supply.

Travel websites were last night quoting direct flights from Dublin to Madrid on May 31, returning on June 2, for as much as £878.

Return flights from Dublin on the same dates, including stop-offs at Gatwick airport, cost more than £670.

Some supporters aiming for a cheaper option may be forced to make circuitous journeys to the Spanish capital.

One popular website suggested fans travelling from Belfast International should fly to Majorca, stay overnight, and get a second flight to Madrid at a cost of at least £500.

Liverpool's shock victory has delighted supporters in the north.

Falls Road Liverpool Supporters' Club said its members were thrilled by the win.

"We have never seen a comeback like this before against a side such as Barcelona," secretary Martin Cummins said.

"To score four goals without reply and not having our full strength squad was a miracle, and at Anfield that's where miracles can happen.

"The world knows today that Liverpool FC are European royalty.

"Liverpool FC never give up when all the odds are against us and no one giving us a chance.

"Our amazing team played for the shirt last night. They played with the spirit of Shankly and Paisley's 11."

He added: "We are so very proud of our team and our manager Jurgen Klopp."

"All we need now is our trophy."
