THREE people died in a weekend of serious accidents on Ireland’s roads.

A man in his sixties died in a three-vehicle collision on Castleward Road, Strangford, Co Down at 11.30am on Sunday. The road was closed afterwards for most of the day.

A rapid response paramedic and ambulance crew were dispatched and the air ambulance was scrambled but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said a motorcycle, a Renault Clio and a Nissan Qashqai were involved in the crash. Witnesses or drivers with dashcam footage are asked to come forward.

A woman in her twenties remained in hospital on Sunday night after being struck by a black Seat Leon car in James Street, Cookstown, Co Tyrone in the early hours of Saturday.

Emergency services were called to the scene at around 3.20am and the woman was taken to hospital.

In Co Wicklow a pedestrian in his forties died after being hit by a car in early on Sunday. The man was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision at Larragh just after 2am.

The woman in her twenties who was driving the car was not injured. The R755 remained closed yesterday morning while a Garda forensic team examined the scene.

In Co Meath a woman in her thirties was killed when a van and a car collided shortly after 9pm on Friday on the Slane to Drumconrath Road in Lobinstown, Navan.

The woman, who had been driving the car, was pronounced dead at the scene. The van driver was not injured.

Meanwhile, a cyclist died after being found collapsed on a Co Down road on Saturday.

He was found shortly after 1pm on Ballynahinch Road in Dromara and emergency services were called but he was pronounced dead at the scene. 

His death is not being treated as suspicious.
