SDLP assembly member Nichola Mallon is celebrating the birth of her third child.

The north Belfast politician gave birth to her first son at the Mater Hospital shortly after midnight.

Ms Mallon and husband Brendan Scott have named the baby boy Emmett Thomas and join the couple's two daughters born in August 2015 and May 2017.

The SDLP deputy leader and former Lord Mayor of Belfast paid tribute to staff at the Mater Hospital for their care during the birth.

"I cannot thank the midwives at the Mater Hospital enough," she wrote in a message posted on social media.

"A truly amazing place.

"What’s the betting I turn into one of those Irish mothers with their son."

Dozens of well-wishers have congratulated Ms Mallon, including many fellow politicians.

SDLP MLA Patsy McGlone wrote: "Brilliant! Congratulations to you both Nichola".

Alliance leader Naomi Long said: "Congratulations Nichola. Take care and enjoy your time with baby Emmett".

DUP councillor Peter Martin also wrote: "That’s wonderful news Nicola, every blessing to your expanding family".
