STORMONT officials are being urged to introduce extra safety measures on a Co Tyrone road after a three-car crash claimed the lives of two Slovakian men.

Three others were also taken to hospital with serious injuries following the accident on Sunday afternoon on the main road between Dungannon and Moy.

The men who died were travelling in a silver Skoda Octavia.

A female passenger from the Octavia was also taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast with serious injuries, as were the male driver and female passenger from a grey Toyota.

Two others in a black Volvo also involved in the crash near Moy did not require hospital treatment.

Tom Sullivan, honorary consul in Northern Ireland for the Slovak Republic, said the embassy in London has been in touch with the relatives of those who died.

He said they would support relatives in any decision to repatriate the men's bodies.

"It's a hugely tragic event. My thoughts are with the families of those involved and everyone who was injured," he said.

"The Slovak embassy are in touch and are doing all that they can to support the families and ensure that their wishes are taken forward in terms of getting the remains repatriated."

Sinn Féin's Michelle Gildernew, MP for Fermanagh and South Tyrone, said the three-vehicle crash had "shocked the community".

She said it happened on a "notorious" corner and she would be asking Department of Infrastructure officials for extra safety measures at the location.

SDLP councillor Denise Mullen also extended her condolences to the families of those who died.

"The local community is in shock this morning. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have suffered serious injuries and we hope they make a full recovery," she said.

Meanwhile, police have issued a renewed appeal for information about a collision in December 27 on a nearby stretch of road in which a pedestrian died.

Father-of-three Terence Fox (46), a member of St Colmcille's GAA club near Loughgall, was walking at Moy Road at about 5am when he was struck by a car.

Constable Tracey McConnell said she was seeking to trace the driver of a white van believed to have been travelling on Moy Road in the direction of Armagh between 5.05am and 5.10am that morning.

"I am appealing for the driver of the white van to get in touch as they may be able to assist us with our enquiries," she said.

She urged the van driver or anyone else with information to contact the PSNI's collision investigation unit on 101.
