A GROUP opposed to the building of a new education campus in Co Armagh has vowed to continue its campaign despite council approving the £45 million project.

Around 200 protesters gathered outside Craigavon Civic Centre on Monday night.

The new Southern Regional College is to be built on land at the City Park in Craigavon, between Portadown and Lurgan.

Those opposed say it will occupy valuable green space, which is used for a variety of leisure purposes.

The proposal for the lakeside scheme was passed this month by Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Boorugh Council's planning committee.

Campaign group Save Craigavon City Park and Lakes claims alternative sites are available and that the campus, which will replace colleges in Portadown and Lurgan, will bring 2,700 students onto the site every day.

However, those behind the plan say various locations have been explored and the chosen site is the most suitable.

Construction work is already under way on a new £35m 'super' leisure centre on the same site.

Campaign group member Kelly Laverty said it was considering a judicial review.

Ms Laverty claimed it was the biggest issue ever to unite the community of Craigavon, with 6,627 people signing the petition to stop the development.
