Man dead and woman taken to hospital after shooting in Warrenpoint, Co Down

A MAN is understood to have been killed on Friday night in a shooting in Warrenpoint, Co Down.

It is understood that a woman was taken to Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry by ambulance. Her condition was unknown as of 10.30pm.

Police were at the scene in the Lower Dromore Road area where the shooting happened at about 8pm.

A spokesman for the ambulance service said it was “tasked by police to a gunshot incident”.

“We dispatched two rapid response vehicles and two emergency ambulances,” he said.

“We were told that there were two patients. One patient was conveyed to Daisy Hill Hospital.”

It is understood that the other person died at the scene.

SDLP South Down MLA Sinead Bradley described it as “shocking news coming from Warrenpoint” and said it happened in a quiet area close to the golf club.

“One fatality confirmed as investigation is ongoing,” she said.

“Whatever the circumstances for someone to have lost their life it is devastating news.”
