THE arrival of Santa delivered Christmas gifts of a special kind at maternity wards across the north.

For one family from Dundonald on the outskirts of east Belfast, future Christmases will signal a double birthday celebration.

The Cash family welcomed their new as yet unnamed baby girl into the world at the Ulster Hospital at 1.15am - the same day dad Neil, a twin, celebrates his birthday.

And it was the same story in the National Maternity Hospital in Holles Street, Dublin, where Justyna Zeilonka’s new baby boy Leon now shares a birthday with his father Robert.

The child was born shortly after 9am on Christmas Day.

The first Christmas baby to be born this year was Aislinn White's baby girl who arrived at 12.34am at Belfast's Royal Victoria Hospital and weighed 7lb 7oz.

Aine Nesbitt gave birth to a baby boy named Conor almost two hours later at 3.16am while Jia Ling gave birth to a baby girl, named Chen, at 8.47am and new mum Lisa Rodgers also welcomed her baby son into the world at the Royal Victoria Hospital.
