Tyrone man believed to be target of armed gang had been questioned over drugs after death of woman at his home

A Co Tyrone man believed to be the intended target of a paramilitary-style attack was questioned by police about drug offences days after a woman died suddenly at his house.

It is understood Christopher Reid was arrested by police two days after Aine Campbell (26) died at his bungalow in the Coolnafranky area of Cookstown on October 1.

A second man Liam Campbell (36), no relation, also died suddenly at the same property in June.

Earlier this week a house where Reid, who has dozens of previous criminal convictions, is believed to have been staying in Carrickmore was attacked by a gang of masked men who were said to be armed.

A spokesman for the PSNI last night said: “A 34-year-old male was arrested in the Cookstown area on Wednesday October 3 on suspicion of possession of a class A controlled drug and possession of a class C controlled drug.

“He was interviewed and subsequently released on police bail pending further enquiries.”

Reid is believed to have left the Coolnafranky area several weeks ago and his bungalow was later boarded up.

It's understood he moved to a new address in Carrickmore.

Police say that windows at the front and rear of the property in McKeone Villas were smashed at around 8.30pm on Tuesday

Inspector Trevor Stevenson said police received a report of an aggravated burglary and that six masked men entered the house and “threatened the occupant with what is believed to be a firearm”.

“The female occupant of the house was not injured, but was left badly shaken,” he said.

Sinn Féin MLA Declan McAleer condemned the attack.

In recent months there has been a spate of sudden deaths involving young people in the Mid Ulster area, including that of Ms Campbell.

She was the second person to die in the Coolnafranky Park property in recent months.

A day after Mr Campbell died in June another man, Gary McCabe (30), also passed away at a house in Dungannon.

The pair are believed to have known each other.

In May Mark Hay (34) died at a house in nearby Moneymore, Co Derry.

Earlier this month Wayne Bell died in hospital after earlier taking ill at a house in Moygashel, near Dungannon.

In October 2016 Amy Reid, who came from Coolnafranky Park in Cookstown is believed to have died after attending a party at a flat in Coagh, Co Tyrone.
