UP to 12 people were evacuated from a block of flats in Co Derry after arsonists set fire to an apartment early yesterday.

A second floor flat in Beresford Court in Coleraine was torched at around 2am yesterday.

Police said no one was in the flat at the time.

Up to 30 firefighters attended the blaze and managed to stop it spreading.

A police spokesman said officers were investigating an arson attack at the block.

Fire service group commander Tom Morrow said the flat was badly damaged.

"There's a number of residents whose accommodation is no longer fit for purpose, so the Red Cross are looking after five of the residents until the Housing Executive, working with social care, is able to find them alternative accommodation," he said.

Police have appealed to anyone with information to contact them.
