A 36-FOOT giant is set to be paraded through the streets of Warrenpoint, Co Down in the hope that spectators will be able to wake him up.

Travelling by ferry from Carlingford, the giant, called Finn Mac Cumhaill, will be part of a noisy parade on Saturday 18 August at 4pm.

The annual Wake the Giant event, now in its third year, is a two-day festival of entertainment and performance for all the family including music, arts and crafts and speciality food stalls.

It takes place on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 August.

The stories of Finn Mac Cumhaill are woven deep into the history of the region – from his travails on Slieve Gullion, to his battles with rival giants. Each year, these epic tales are re-enacted in Warrenpoint in a collaborative performance.

Renowned actor and writer, Dan Gordon is creating the narrative for this year's show.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chair, Councillor Mark Murnin, said: “Wake the Giant is one of our most highly anticipated events within the summer programme. Every year the numbers keep growing and this year we don’t expect that to change.

"Local businesses and traders across Warrenpoint really embrace this festival and the area has so much to offer visitors."

Wake the Giant is one of five events in the Giant Adventures summer programme, a series of family festivals run by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council to showcase the areas breath-taking mountains, coastline and mythical stories.
