A MOTORIST was lucky to escape serious injury after a petrol bomb was thrown at the van he was driving during trouble in Derry.

Video footage of the incident, which was posted online, is believed to have been captured during trouble in the Bogside area of the city on Thursday.

The footage appears to show a hooded petrol bomber throwing the device at the driver's side front window of the white van from point blank range.

The potentially deadly device can been seen bouncing off the windscreen before falling to the ground and exploding.

Seconds before it was thrown, the driver can be seen veering towards the attacker who had stepped onto the road with the device in his hand.

As the attacker prepared to throw the petrol bomb a female onlooker can be heard saying “A white van, are you having a laugh, are you having a laugh?”

She is then heard to shout as the petrol bomb is hurled.

"What f****** planet are you on?" she said.

"Are you having a f****** laugh?"

The attacker then jogs away from the scene while shielding his face from the camera.

Earlier this week a van was hijacked and burned out by rioters in the same area.
