Student Connor McCarthy told the Irish News yesterday that he is lucky to be alive after one of the cars involved in the collision crashed through his garden, where he was sitting on a bench.

The 26-year-old was just about to go into inside to watch England v Colombia in the World Cup when he heard an "explosion" and a car came "flying towards me",

Mr McCarthy said the car, a silver driving instructor car, caused him to dive to the right hand side.

"The bench took an impact," he said.

"It was just instinct. I hit the floor and ran into the house squealing".

On returning back outside, a shocked Mr McCarthy said he heard the man inside the car shouting for them to call 999.

"There was another car across the road with a wee baby being pulled out of it. It was bedlam," he said.

"If I had have stayed sitting there I would have got injured badly".

The 26-year-old, who suffered cuts to his leg in the crash, said a window in his house had been broken during the crash

"There was debris from the cars bouncing everywhere, smashing windows," he said

"It was just a quiet, sunny day, getting ready to watch the match and then absolute bedlam".

Erin Hawkins, who was visiting her parents' house on the Crumlin Road when the collision happened, said the family were alerted to what had

happened by "rumbling noise".

On going outside, the 40-year-old said she was "met with devastation".

She said the inside of the one of the Audi's tyres had smashed a neighbour's window before landing in the garden.

"There was a wee baby," she said.

"There was blood coming down their nose. The daddy looked like he had a collapsed lung. They were from Antrim. The mummy had been travelling in the car behind".

Ms Hawkins, who described the scene as "horrific", revealed the man in the driving instructor's car had to be cut out of the wreckage.

"We were all in shock for a bit," she said.

"There needs to be an urgent police review of the tactics."
