A suspicious object which sparked a security alert in a Co Down village was a viable device, police have said.

British army bomb disposal experts were called to Naghan Court - a residential area of Seaforde - at around 3pm on Monday after an object was found.

Some residents had to leave their homes while it was examined.

The alert ended at around 9.40pm after it was declared a viable device.

Sinn Féin assembly member Emma Rogan said those behind the alert had shown "complete disregard" for the community in Seaforde.

"This security alert caused significant disruption to local residents," she said.

"Incidents like this serve no purpose other than bringing disruption to the community and they need to stop immediately.

"I would call on anyone with information to bring it forward to the police."
