THE son of former health minister and DUP MLA Edwin Poots is to appear in court charged with dangerous driving.

DUP councillor Luke Poots faces one charge of dangerous driving and the case is due at Belfast Magisrates Court tomorrow.

The 28-year-old, a councillor for Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council, is accused of driving a vehicle dangerously on Grosvenor Road in Belfast on December 7 last year.

Mr Poots, of Gardners Road outside Lisburn, did not respond to requests for a comment yesterday when contacted by The Irish News.

In a statement a DUP spokeswoman said: "The party are aware of this matter and it will be considered by the party officers."

Mr Poots was co-opted onto the old Lisburn City Council in March 2013 before being elected to the newly formed Lisburn and Castlereagh council the following year.

The Downshire East area representative, who also works as a farmer, sits on the council's environmental services committee and chairs its planning committee.
