Two people have been arrested following the discovery of items, thought to be component parts for pipe bombs, during searches in the Ardoyne area of north Belfast.

Detectives from PSNI Organised Crime Unit have made two arrests and seized a number of items following a search of a property in the Havana Gardens area yesterday.

A man and a woman, both aged 59, were arrested and there was a heavy police presence in the area for most of the day.

Detective Inspector Chris Millar said the two people were arrested on "suspicion of firearms and explosives offences".

"They are currently in police custody, assisting with enquiries.

"Detectives also seized a number of items which have been taken away for examination".
