POLICE investigating dissident republican activity in Derry have leafleted residents in the Creggan area to appeal for information.

There have been tensions in the area following clashes at an Easter commemoration march last month.

Political leaders have also raised the police handling of house searches.

The PSNI said the leaflets posted to homes in the Ballymagowan area were in response to dissident activity.

The leaflet says: “We are appealing for information following reports of suspicious terrorist related activity by violent dissident republicans in your area.

“If you suspect that serious criminal activity is taking place in your neighbourhood you don’t have to stay silent. You and your family have the right to live in an area free from the use of violence and intimidation.”

Police invited householders with CCTV covering their property or anyone with information to pass it on to them.

The new initiative was criticised by dissident republican political group Saoradh.

A PSNI spokesman said police regularly distribute literature seeking help in addressing "illegal and criminal activity".
