A 16-year-old from Co Antrim is competing against Old Trafford stars Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez for Manchester United's hotly-contested goal of the month award.

Former Glengormley High School pupil Ethan Galbraith's title-clinching stunner in a 2-1 derby victory over Manchester City is among eight contenders for the club's penultimate monthly prize for the 2017/18 season.

He will find out at midday whether he has beaten his rivals with his first goal for the club.

His effort for the Under-18s is up against the Pogba finish which inspired the Red Devils' thrilling Premier League comeback against Manchester City last month and a header from Chilean striker Sanchez.

Also in contention is Chris Smalling's volleyed winner in the 3-2 victory at the Etihad Stadium and Ander Herrera's edge-of-the-box strike in the FA Cup semi-final against Tottenham at Wembley.

Romelu Lukaku's chipped finish during United's 2-0 win at Bournemouth, a goal by Reserves captain Joe Riley against Sunderland, and a strike by Under-18 Mason Greenwood against Middlesbrough are also up for the fan vote.

Ethan, who started his football career with Carnmoney Colts before playing for underage teams at Ballyclare Comrades, Glentoran, Crusaders and Linfield, is a defensive midfielder who joined United on a full-time basis last summer.

He has also represented Northern Ireland at Under-17 in the European Championships and his mother Tracey Galbraith said he is taking the nomination in his stride.

"We've always tried to keep his feet on the ground because you have to take the good with the bad," she said.

"It's hard work that's got him here. He loves it."
