A man has been remanded in custody charged with arson after a woman and two children were rescued from a house in north Belfast.

Steven Colhoun, 45, appeared before the city's Magistrates Court accused of starting the blaze at Jellicoe Avenue and making a threat to kill.

Fire crews were called to the scene early on Monday morning after flames from a burning car spread to a gas box and the eaves of the semi-detached property.

A woman in her fifties and two children, reportedly aged eight and thirteen, were helped from the house and escaped injury.

Colhoun, of Antrim Road in Belfast, is charged with arson endangering their lives with intent.

He is also accused of threatening to kill the woman and driving while unfit through drink or drugs at the scene of the blaze.

Colhoun is further charged with harassing her and improperly using a public electronic communications network to send a message for the purpose of causing annoyance, inconvenience or needless anxiety.

He spoke only to confirm that he understood the allegations against him.

No questions were put to a detective constable who said she could connect him to

the charges.

Colhoun's lawyer also told the court he was not seeking bail at this stage.

District Judge Fiona Bagnall then remanded him in custody to appear again by video-link on May 22.
