AN attempted arson attack at an Orange Hall in Co Tyrone is being treated as a hate crime.

A device, thought to be a petrol bomb, was thrown at the front door of Glenagreeagh Orange Hall near the village of Augher during the early hours of Saturday morning.

The petrol bomb failed to ignite properly and minor damage was caused to the building.

PSNI inspector Marie Stinton said the attempted arson attack is being treated as a hate crime and appealed for any witnesses to contact police.

DUP leader Arlene Foster condemned the attack and said she "looks forward to the day when Orange Halls are respected".

"Actions such as this demonstrate the intolerance of some towards unionist culture," she added.

A spokesperson for the Orange Lodge said the incident was another example of the "intolerant sectarianism".

"The mindless idiots responsible offer nothing to society – only heartache and division. Their senseless actions must be universally condemned," they added.

Saturday's attempted arson is the second time this month an Orange hall has been targeted in Co Tyrone, following a separate paint bomb attack at Aughintober, near Dungannon.
