A former GAA coach confronted by self-styled 'paedophile hunters' will not be involved in any club activity while the matter is being investigated.

The man, who is in his thirties and has denied the allegations, has coached underage teams at his club in Co Antrim in the past.

In a statement issued last night, the club said: “Following allegations that a member had, in a personal capacity, engaged inappropriately on social media, we can confirm that this person will not participate in any activities of the GAA, at any level or with any team, until such time as the allegations have been fully investigated and a conclusion has been reached."

It added: “Safeguarding children in our club is an area of priority for us.

“The GAA has robust safeguarding policies and procedures that we have fully implemented to ensure we provide a safe environment for our children to participate in Gaelic games and activities.

“The association will cooperate fully, if requested to do so, with any investigation initiated by the statutory authorities.”

The man is believed to have been confronted at his home in a rural village by members of a group styling itself Predator Catchers Northern Ireland.

Police said he was later arrested “on suspicion of attempted sexual communication with a child”.

“He has been released on strict police bail pending further enquiries,” a spokesman said.

The Ulster Council of the GAA said it has protocols in place and “any allegation is treated very seriously”.

A spokesman last night said: “We will be following the policy we have.

“It’s also the subject of a live investigation and until that’s completed we will not be making any comment."

During the confrontation, which was broadcast live on Facebook, the man was accused of having online conversations with what he thought was a 14-year-old boy.

The man repeatedly denied grooming children and when further accused said: "I'm not that person."

His house was later attacked by arsonists and police have said they are “investigating the possibility there is a link between the two incidents”.
