A man armed with a gun has robbed a fast food outlet in east Belfast.

The gunman approached a member of staff outside the premises at Connswater Retail Park at around 5am yesterday and ordered him inside where he demanded money.

He then escaped on a bicycle with a sum of cash.

The robber was wearing a black-hooded top, gloves and had a scarf covering his face.

Police said the member of staff "was not injured but left shaken by the ordeal".

Alliance councillor David Armitage said he was "appalled" by the robbery.

"The thug behind this incident clearly has no regard for the safety of others and is a danger to society," he said.

"Connswater is a growing shopping complex and incidents such as this are not indicative of the area or its people."

Police have appealed for information.
