A PROMINENT Co Tyrone businessman has died in a quad biking accident.

The man, named locally as 45-year-old Nishi Ward, died in Plumbridge at around 5pm yesterday.

It is understood the fatal accident happened when a quad bike fell on top of him. A rapid response paramedic, an accident and emergency crew and the air ambulance attended the incident. However it is understood Mr Ward died at the scene.

The businessman, who founded Waste Systems in Plumbridge, was married with young children.

The company manufactures machines which process waste.

In December last year, it was announced that the business was set to grow its sales in overseas market after receiving a £1 million cash injection.

SDLP West Tyrone MLA Daniel McCrossan said he knew Mr Ward well and had held a meeting with him last week.

"He was absolutely committed to growing his business and creating more jobs for people in Plumbridge and the greater area," he said.

"He was a very well liked man, very well respected. He was very driven, a hard worker and a family man. It's just tragic news."

Mr McCrossan said Mr Ward's sudden death "will be a serious loss to the community and to local people".

"It’s hard to imagine," he said.

"My thoughts and prayers and those of my entire party are with his family and friends at this tragic time. I know people here in Plumbridge will come together to support them at such a difficult time."

Sinn Féin West Tyrone MLA Declan McAleer said people living in the area were stunned by the news.

"I have spoken to local people and there is a palpable sense of shock," he said.

"Plumbridge and the Glenelly Valley are close knit communities where everyone knows each other through farming, work and community activities.

"The death occurred earlier this evening so the precise details are still emerging. However, at this stage I want to extend my sympathy and condolences to the dead man's family at this tragic time."
