A MAN has died after he was knocked down in greater Belfast.

The crash happened on the Saintfield Road between south Belfast and Carryduff at around 1.45pm yesterday.

It is understood the man, believed to be a pensioner, was attempting to cross the road close to Baronscourt Road when the crash happened.

The Saintfield Road was closed in both directions for several hours following the collision. It re-opened late last night.

South Belfast MP Emma Little-Pengelly extended her sympathies to the man's family.

"Devastating news that a man has lost his life on the Saintfield Road this afternoon - my thoughts and prayers are with his family at this dreadful time," she wrote on Facebook.

"We will continue to fight for additional safety measures on this busy and fast road."

Meanwhile, a lane of the M1 country-bound was closed just after Broadway in west Belfast due to a collision around midday yesterday.

It is understood a woman was taken to hospital following the crash.
