AN Italian tourist was airlifted by the Coastguard after he fell on Carrick-a-Rede Island off the north Antrim coast.

It is understood the man suffered leg injuries on the island, linked to the mainland by the famous rope bridge, at around midday yesterday.

A Coastguard helicopter from Prestwick in Scotland airlifted him to the Causeway Hospital in Coleraine for treatment.

Meanwhile, a Canadian woman was also taken to hospital after she slipped and banged her head on rocks at the Giant's Causeway.

Her injuries were not thought to be serious.
