HUNDREDS of mourners have attended the funeral of a Belfast Methodist minister who had a "passionate commitment to reconciliation".

Rev Margaret Ferguson, a former minister at Woodvale Methodist Church and superintendent of the East Belfast Mission, died aged 61 earlier this week after a battle with cancer.

Respected by all religious traditions, Rev Ferguson was asked to be on the board of governors of St Mary’s Christian Brothers Grammar School and had met both President Mary McAleese and Queen Elizabeth.

She had also been a guest preacher at the Clonard Novena, which has remembered her at Masses this week.

"As part of her training to become a Methodist minister Margaret did a placement with our unity pilgrims," it said.

"When she became minister in Woodvale Methodist she was in Clonard regularly, strengthening the Shankill/Falls bond with a passionate commitment to reconciliation, and always with a smile."

Woodvale Methodist Church said she touched many people’s lives and will be "sorely missed by us all".

"After eight years as minister here at Woodvale, Margaret was very well known and loved by the people across the Greater Shankill community and beyond."

Rev Ferguson's funeral took place at Mountpottinger Methodist Church.
