A MAN has been killed in a one-vehicle crash on the M1 motorway in Co Tyrone.

The crash took place around 12.35pm on the citybound stretch between junctions 12 and 13, close to Tamnamore.

It is understood that the driver of the grey Honda Civic car was the only occupant of the vehicle.

It is believed the driver lost control of the car at the turn-off for Loughgall and collided with a road sign.

There was heavy rain on the motorway at the time.

The collision led to the closure of part of the M1 for several hours throughout yesterday, and caused major delays in both directions.

Fermanagh and South Tyrone Ulster Unionist MLA Rosemary Barton tweeted: "Shocked to hear about serious RTC at Tamnamore on M1. My thoughts are with all those involved and the emergency services."

Police have appealed for anyone with information to contact officers on 101.
