A MAN who repeatedly raped an eight-year-old girl in the grounds of a Catholic Church in Co Derry was jailed yesterday for 10 years.

Louis Feeny (66), from Killowen Street in Coleraine, who is already a convicted sex offender serving a jail sentence, raped the girl almost every day in August 1973.

Derry Crown Court heard Feeny first met the girl outside the Star Of The Sea church in Portstewart as she was walking to swimming lessons.

Feeny raped her in a toilet block at the back of the church.

The court heard he threatened her that if she told anybody about the rapes he would report her to police for stealing from the church's collection box.

Feeny pleaded guilty to six specimen charges of rape. He was originally questioned in October 2000 but was not prosecuted.

When his other sexual offences came to light he was questioned again. He was due to stand trial in September of this year but changed his plea to guilty on the morning of his trial.
