Man taken to hospital after being injured in ‘serious assault' in Co Antrim
A MAN believed to be in his thirties has been seriously assaulted in the Co Antrim village of Bendooragh.
According to reports late on Sunday, the man was attacked on Bann Road in the village, a few miles outside Ballymoney, sometime between 7.30pm and 8.30pm.
The man was taken to hospital for treatment, although his injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.
It is understood the man is known to police.
North Antrim DUP MLA Mervyn Storey said it was unclear whether the attack was linked to paramilitaries or was simply criminal.
“Whatever is behind it the rule of law needs to be followed,” he said. “We can’t have people handing out their own form of justice.”
He added: “In the cover of darkness masked men took the law into their own hands to execute their form of justice”.
“This was not the freedom that we were remembering today. Rather these were the actions of those who would impose their form of justice, according to their rules. This is not what our community wants.
“Whatever the motive and whoever was involved, this type of action is to be condemned in the strongest possible way. I would encourage anyone with information to contact the PSNI.”
The Bann Road was closed on Sunday night after the attack.
