A LEADING loyalist arrested in connection with the murder of former UDA 'brigadier' John Boreland is believed to have handed himself into police for questioning before he was later releaed without charge.

Detectives arrested the 39-year-old on Monday after he presented himself with his solicitor to the Serious Crime Suite at Musgrave Police Station.

Boreland was shot dead as he stepped out of his car outside his flat in Sunningdale Gardens in north Belfast, on Sunday August 7.

Rival loyalists are accused of murdering the one time UDA boss who was a close associate of Andre Shoukri.

Three men, Darren McAllister (33) from Carrs Glen, Belfast, Thomas Pearson (61) from Cliftondene Park in the city and Thomas O'Hara (29) from Brownhill Drive, Kilbirnie, Scotland have already been charged in connection with the gun attack.

O'Hara, McAllister and Pearson appeared in court last week accused of destroying a silver Renault Megane sought by police in connection with the murder on a date between August 6-11.

All three were remanded in custody.
