A pub in Co Fermanagh has been renamed for the upcoming European Championships in honour of its most famous son.

The Mayfly Inn in Kesh underwent a name change yesterday and for the duration of the tournament will be known as 'Lafferty' in honour of Northern Ireland star Kyle Lafferty, who hails from the town in north Fermanagh.

The idea came from the head of entertainment at the pub Robert Anderson as a unique way of showing their support for the local striker.

"I guess at the minute with Kyle being from the town, he's on the tip of everyone's tongue. If you go into the shop or into the local club they're all talking about Kyle. With the Euros coming up and him being the main striker we thought we couldn't let it go without doing something."

So far the name change and banners erected are stopping traffic in the town.

"It's been unreal, it's caused a few traffic jams in the town, people are slowing down and taking photographs from their car or observing and there are people taking selfies also," Mr Anderson added.

Both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland have qualified for the European Championships this summer in France, with the action kicking off on June 10.

Northern Ireland begin their campaign against Poland on Sunday June 12, while the Republic of Ireland take on Sweden a day later.
