EIGHT PSNI officers will travel to France to keep an eye on Northern Ireland fans during this summer's European Championships.

They will be based in the country for the duration of Northern Ireland's involvement in the tournament, which kicks off next month.

Thousands of supporters are expected to throng the streets of Nice, Lyon and Paris.

A PSNI spokesman said officers would be deployed "to support the French policing operation and help ensure a safe and trouble-free tournament".

Fans are gearing up for a mass exodus with thousands of match tickets sold. Fan zones with big screens will be established near the beachfront in Nice, central Lyon and under the shadow of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The PSNI will be part of a wider UK policing operation.
