A WOMAN in her eighties had her purse stolen by a burglar at her home in Derry.

It happened at Glencaw Park early on Sunday.

Police said the intruder fled after seeing the pensioner in her bedroom.

A purse containing an undisclosed sum of money was stolen from a downstairs room and was later found empty in nearby Cashel Hill Park.

Detective Constable Emma Marshall said officers were also investigating reports that a man had been seen banging at the front door of a nearby property just before the break-in at 3.50am.

She said: "I would like to hear from anyone with information about this crime or who may have witnessed any unusual activity, either in Glencaw Park, Cashel Hill Park or any of the surrounding areas of Galliagh."
