NORTHERN Ireland Screen has launched an interactive Game of Thrones filming locations app which will allow fans worldwide to view the locations used in the HBO drama.

Featuring 21 stunning locations, the app has been developed for Android and iOS and is available to download free from the Google Play Store now and from the App Store soon.

Bridging the gap between fantasy and reality, the interactive map allows users to flip between the mythical worlds of Westeros and Essos and Northern Ireland locations such as Inch Abbey, Ballintoy Harbour, Tollymore Forest and Portstewart Strand.

Twenty two scenes from seasons one to five from the show are featured on the app, with detailed information on each scene and where it was filmed, as well as official stills from the show.

Fans can also experience the beauty of Northern Ireland from their own home as each location features a 360 degree panoramic photograph.

The locations app was developed by Northern Ireland studio, The Design Zoo, with funding from Northern Ireland Screen supported by Invest NI and with HBO assets used under licence.

The launch of the app on Thursday marks the end of the first stage of development with plans for further development already in place, including more locations and scenes from past and future seasons, and with funding support from Tourism Northern Ireland.

Richard Williams, chief executive of Northern Ireland Screen, said “We are delighted with how the app has turned out and would like to thank HBO for their tremendous support during development.

"Game of Thrones has now become a huge part of Northern Ireland culture and we know the appetite for information about the show is vast around the world.

"We hope that the app will allow visitors and fans of Game of Thrones to see the massive part the Northern Ireland landscape plays in the series.”

John McGrillen, chief executive of Tourism NI, said: “The Game of Thrones locations app is a great innovation which will undoubtedly enhance the overall visitor experience.

"It will enable visitors to make the link between the Game of Thrones fantasy and the spectacular real-life setting here in Northern Ireland. We look forward to working in partnership with Northern Ireland Screen on further development of the app.”
