CONCERN has been expressed following the discovery of a pipe bomb in north Belfast.

The device was found after a security alert in Lepper Street, in the New Lodge area.

Police described the device as crude but viable.

Roads in the area were closed for a time but later reopened.

The pipe bomb was removed for forensic examination.

Sinn Féin councillor JJ Magee said he was concerned by the development.

"This alert caused disruption in the local area with the closure of Lepper Street for a number of hours,” he said.

"Given that schools were back today following mid-term break many young people may well have passed this device.

"Those behind this incident have nothing to offer the local community and need to end these pointless actions immediately."
