EMILY and James were the most popular names given to babies born in Northern Ireland last year.

It is the third year in a row that Emily has topped the list, while it is the first time James has held the top spot.

New entries into the respective top tens in 2015 included Jake, Matthew, Aoife and Ava.

More unusual names given to babies last year include Cruz, Theon and Arya and there was even an Olaf and Elsa born in the north.

According to figures released by the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency, there were 300 babies named James in 2015.

While it may have been the first time James topped the poll, the name has been in the top five since records began in 1997.

Jack, which had held the lead from 2003, fell to second on 261 followed by Noah in third place with 225.

There were 223 babies called Emily last year, while 197 were named Ella and 192 for Grace.

The statistics show there were 179 babies named Sophie and 153 called Olivia.

Jackson climbed the greatest number of places to join the top 100 names for boys, rising from 145 in 2014 to 75.

New entries Jake and Matthew into the top 10, replaced Ethan and Jacob.

While the popularity of boys names has varied over the years, James, Jack, Daniel and Matthew have all stood the test of time featuring in both the 2015 top 10 and a decade previously.

Cruz, Jon, Olaf, Theon and Tyrion on the otherhand were some of the less common names given to baby boys last year.

For girls Emily continued her dominance at the top with 233 babies given the name.

Ella was next, narrowly overtaking Grace in third.

Rosa however climbed the greatest number of places to join the top 100 names for girls, moving from rank 147 in 2014 to 53 last year.

Aoife and Ava also rose in popularity to join the girl's top 10, replacing Eva and Sophia.

Compared with boys, a greater number of girls names have held the top spot since the reporting of first names began in 1997.

Both Emily and Sophie each held the top position on three occasions, while Chloe and Katie each held it on six occasions.

In terms of popularity, Sophie and Anna have stood the test of time featuring in both the top 10 last year and a decade ago.

Some of the less common names given to baby girls in 2015 were Arya, Elsa, Rita and Suri.

James, Jack, Noah, Charlie, Daniel, Oliver, Matthew, Harry, Thomas and Jake.
