POLICE investigating the alleged mistreatment of patients at Muckamore Abbey Hospital have arrested a 33-year-old man.

A spokesman said members of the PSNI's Public Protection Branch detained the man in the Antrim area on Monday morning.

The man was later released on police bail pending further enquiries.

The arrest is the latest in relation to abuse allegations at the Antrim facility, which is run by the Belfast Health Trust and cares for adults with severe learning difficulties and mental health needs.

Muckamore Abbey is at the centre of the largest PSNI adult safeguarding investigation ever to take place in Northern Ireland, with officers examining thousands of hours of CCTV footage from the facility's wards.
