AN Ulster University lecturer has developed an app that records rhythm and activity of the heart, helping with the interpretation of electrocardiogram, or ECG, reports.

It is hoped the Analyse ECG Reporting app will improve clinical training and reduce the risk of misdiagnosis and subsequent deaths.

Around 300 million ECGs are performed worldwide annually and a number of studies have highlighted deficiencies in ECG interpretation skills among health professionals due to the complexity of the readings

Developed by Cathal Breen, lecturer in clinical physiology in the School of Health Sciences at Ulster University, the app has been downloaded 10,000 and is in use in educational institutions in Ireland, UK, Europe, USA, Canada, the Philippines and Pakistan.
