TWO non-selective Catholic secondary schools in Co Derry have been honoured - each winning one of education's top prizes.

St Colm's High School in Draperstown achieved a TES Award for the second year.

It was recognised in the Community and Collaboration category.

St Cecilia's College in Derry city was named one of Britain and Northern Ireland's most inspirational schools, winning a Pearson National Teaching Gold Award.

It was presented with the accolade for Making a Difference - Secondary School of the Year.

At St Colm's, its inter-generational project involved Cornerstore Youth Club members, Ballinascreen Fold residents, Men's Shed volunteers and Suicide Talking Education Prevention Support.

It strives to bridge the gap between generations and benefits both age groups, developing good community relations stretching far beyond the timescale of the project.

It involved the development of an eco-friendly garden for the fold as well as pupils visiting and entertaining residents.

The TES Award also recognised excellent partnerships within the local community.

"Winning another prestigious TES Award two years in a row is absolutely amazing," said Principal Roisin McKenna.

"The TES judges said the Ballinascreen Intergenerational Project made community relationships blossom. Under the leadership of Clare Devlin the connections with many outside agencies has been phenomenal and this award is a testimony to this tremendous work and is richly deserved.

"All groups work together for the good of the parish and the health and wellbeing of St Colm's High School and the wider community. It is particularly heartwarming to receive this positive award during these challenging times."

Meanwhile, St Cecilia's was praised for having some of the best results in the UK despite being located in one of the most disadvantaged areas of the north.

Staff were praised for creating opportunities, through bespoke partnership and collaboration programmes to inspire pupils to achieve qualifications, employability skills and the mindset that will set them on the path of success.

The school's partnership with Lisneal College, a state controlled school in the waterside, was hailed as continuing to promote a vision for a shared future.

"The entire school community of St Cecilia's College is so proud to be acknowledged in this way," said Principal Martine Mulhern.

"It is recognition for each and every member of staff, family and partner organisation who all put the success of our pupils first. Most of all it is recognition for our amazing girls in green. Their resilience, kindness and humour makes every day a blessing."
